Poor mans carbon arc?

I don't have a carbon arc torch. Can a single carbon rod be used in the stinger for just heating something up such as rusted nuts and bolts?, or for bending stock?
I have a Lincoln G8000 welder.

Absolutely can. I've taken out frozen bucket pins for people that way and preheated cast iron, too. Be sure not to touch the carbon to the base metal. On DC-..... the carbon will last the longest and heat the metal the quickest. Also take care not to over heat the base metal as that will have detrimental effects with some subtrates.
