Generator noise

I just bought a Miller Bobcat 250 NT Welder/Generator with 20HP Kohler engine. Is there anything I can do to quiet the engine? I understand there is something I can put on the exhaust pipe but will this cause any damage? The only time I want to quiet it down is when the Electricity goes out and I connect it to my electricical bypass box and run it at night. We don't have outages very often but here in NE Texas when we lose electricity its usually out for days.

Thanks David

Put an automotive type muffler on it . That will quiet it down and not restrict the exhaust.

Hi David,

You will want to support the muffler so very little weight is on the exhaust manifold. I would use a large flow thru type muffler.

What I did was put the generator outside in a small 4'x8'building it looks like a dog house on a concrete slab (put plastic under it to keep out moisture)....I went to a muffler shop where one size fits all....I ask if they had a muffler that they messed up.....I got one for $5..... I used a tail pipe from the same place...I ran the pipe as long as I could and then outside.....put a el pointed down,to keep the weather out..... I welded a metal plate over the end..... then drilled 6 or 8 -1/4" HOLES IN THE PLATE....total opening of the original size of the stock pipe opening..... very quiet and have had it about 17 years.....you have to keep it serviced and try to run it 30 min. a mounth....I strongly recomend a HONDA.....
