I've heard that I need to use one or the other or maybe both of these for oxy/fuel gas welding. Can someone explain which one(s) to use and where they are placed on the hose? Thanks.

The check valves are designed to stop reverse flow of the mixed gases in the event of a backfire. Check valves will not stop a flame. Flash back arrestors do that. There are combinations of the two that will stop the gas mixture at the handle and will also extinguish a flame. I would at least have the flash arrestor at the gauges and the check valve on the handle. We sell the Victor brand torches which have built-in check valves in the handle.

I have Harris torches and the check valves go on the torch ends just where the hoses connect. They should come in pairs with one thread for oxy and the opposite thread for acetelyne

Hi Slowpoke,

rg is correct they fit on the torch end. Flashback arreators and reverse flow check valves are one in the same.

What your trying to stop is suck back flame traveling back to the regulator thru the hose so that would be best used on the torch end.

From the posts and additional info it looks like I was wrong to generalize where flame arrestors mount.

I decided to do some research into flame arrestors and check valves. Depending on who makes the valve(s) and the design depends on where they get installed. From what I've read so far theres no industry standard. I even found a refference to a "brazing tip" flame arrestor of an unkown mfg.

One mfg makes a dual valve with auto shut-off feature with a sliding sleeve in the event of a flashback. Too reset you just slide the sleeve forward. The valve is in a barrel shape.

Another mfg incorperates a thermally acitvated fail safe valve in the event of a enternal or external fire.

From what I know now I would think a regulator mounted flame arrestor would be best.
