Anyone with experience running portable AC generators? I am looking for a reliable 5500 watt, and a brand on which I can get parts and service. I have a Homelite currently and am very unhappy with performance and durability and the lack of available service.

I ended up getting a 4500w Generac during the ice storm of '98. Love it. the engine is made by generac and has pressure lube and overhead valve. Yery comparible to a honda. About 8 gallons in 24 hrs 1/2 - 3/4 load. Put 240 hours on it and all I did was change oil every 24 hrs. After event I put new plugs and an air filter on it. Run it every other month on a 1000w quartz light for 15-20 min. Also use stabilizer in fuel.

Thanks for all the great information everyone has shared on generator purchasing. This helps me a lot. I continue to be amazed at how few service centers are available in our area (N.C.)and how little they know about repairs.

John,

Check out www.mayberrys.com they are a power tool dealer in N.J. I bought a 3kw very quiet generator from them two years ago. The local dealers in Mass. couldn't come close to the price I got on that machine. Despite the $100 +/_ shipping fee, I saved over $300 buying from them (with savings on taxes, of course).

I have a coleman and I am unhappy with it. I bought it new at a good price but if I had to do it again I would spend the extra money and buy a Honda. Any that I know about are very reliable and just won't die.

Hi John , You won't go wrong buying a Honda or yamaha generator. They are the best on the market when it comes to portable generators. Stay away from Colman. I've burnt up many of them in the past. Homelite is another cheepie , but better than colman. I've burnt up a couple of homelite also , before I got smartened up. When it comes to generators , you get what you pay for. I'm going to send you a site to look at. It will tell you all you need to know. I'd post the link here , but I'm not shure how to. So I'll send it to your e-mail address.

Check into the Honda generators. Great engines. We have a 5000 watt one at work that is 13 years old and it always starts.

Your generator needs to be grounded.the glow plugs need a good ground or they are eratic on starting.I learned that from my hvac friend.

I can't imagine that a glow plug start furnace would require that much power to start. Ours worked fine using a 5KW unit last winter, and we ran it for almost a week that way.

AZ DOT had small generators with B&S engines in the fleet that weren't being used because they were so hard to start. I purchased Honda generators of various sizes from 1000 watts to 5500 watts and the crews used them a lot because they were reliable and easy to start.

What is Honda doing that Briggs cant?
I think people are comparing Briggs bottom line engines with Hondas.
If you Take a top shelf Briggs that is in the same price range as the Hondas you would get the same service from it.
We had done the same for years. Buying 2 1/2 inch pumps with 3 1/2 hp briggs engines. Payed about $160 each and went through many motors.
We are now buying the Honda ones they are good but cost 3 times as much.
