I was given a homelite xl chain saw. It is a 12" size with automatic oiler. It runs great and cuts good. It runs better than my newer 18" craftsman.. It also says homelite textron.. Guy said the oil tank drained itself but that must of been because he used old motor oil.. So what can you tell me about this saw?? How old could this saw be?? Thanks for any help.. Later Chris Smith

I got my (20 inch) XL-1 in '72 and it's still going strong. Great saw, but has no safety features. Gotta know what you're doing.

On the one way valve on the compression line, Will the rubber version out of a fuel cap work?? I went ahead and put it in the line so I will see if it works.. I was just hoping some one would know for sure..

Thanks again.. Chris Smith

What is the proper tension this chain should have?? I noticed there is no bearing in the tip of the bar.. So i no not to get it too tight..

Thanks again.. Chris Smith

You want to tighten it so that it hangs just a little when cold.

Chris ,
I have a Homelite XL that my Dad bought in the late 1980's . It quit running 7 or 8 years ago so he gave it to me . I had her running in about an hour or so and she still cranks right up with just a couple of pulls . I use my Husky 55 for the bigger stuff but I usually use the Homelite for limbing . It is a good saw .

Mine will leak oil out if I use motor oil but it does not seem to leak out when I use Homelite bar oil . It is a lot thicker than motor oil . Give it a shot and see what happens.

Good Luck ! Ford Man

A 1.6 cu in engine. Is there a gold/brass tube still in the end of you pressure line for the check valve inside the top of the oil tank? If not look for it in the bottom of the tank. The tube should have abt 1/16" showing between the check valve & the end of the line. Check the rubber lines to see if they are getting old & soft. Be sure the oil tank cap is sealed so you don't lose the pressure that oils the chain/bar.

The little brass thing is missing. Must be why it is smoking.. Where can I find a new one?? And my oil cap is missing, I figured out the lid off of a shout bottle fits perfectly. It doesn't drip so does that mean it is air tight?? I really like this type oiling system.. Thanks for all the help.... Chris Smith

I don't have it anymore, but I bought the same saw at home depot around 1985...don't hold me to it, but I think it was around $100....ran great, used it alot for limbing after a tree was felled....I had a 038 stihl, and my buddy landed on hard times and need it more than I did so I gave it to him....he used it several years after that...nice little saw, but nothing runs like a stihl.
