Priced two brands, North Star by Northern Tool and Equip. Co., and Campbell-Hausfeld (Farmhand) by TSC. Both units in the $400 range with 5-6.5 HP and 2400-2500 PSI, and 2.4-2.5 GPM. Anyone had any experience with either of these units. Plan to clean a few tractors before painting, etc. Any other brands superior (head and shoulders)above all others?
Thanks,

Many good suggestions here: Especially the Honda engine - I have a 5.5 hp Honda on mine -great little engine. Remember, they're running full load most of the time. I suggest you should look for a unit with at least 2000 psi at 3gpm. You'll be disappointed with much less. We used ours on a 50 year old tractor, and it removed almost all the 50 years of grease and grime, and loose paint without any trouble.

I purchased a lot of portable hot water pressure washers for AZ DOT, but they are not much better than the cold water washers in my personal opinion. They have a lot more problems with controls & burners than a cold water unit. The 110Volt units are only 2gpm; that is all a 20 amp circuit will support. For occasional use, the hot water units are too expensive.

If I were to do things over, I'd get a powerwasher with a Honda engine. You can't beat their reliability and ease of starting. Little if any extra cost on the smaller pressure washers. Otherwise, they all use one of 3-4 major brand of pump systems. All other fittings and hose can be found just about anywhere.

I've been pleased with my Honda-powered Northstar. I use it for washing down bird coops between flocks.

I purchased a Generac 2700 psi pressure washer with a 6.5 hp briggs engine from Lowes this past spring for around $400. Just used it tonight to wash the car and truck..... it seems to work well. Seems like the next step up would be a 3000 psi washer, but the prices almost doubled.

I have a northstar with 10 hp tecumseh and have been well pleased with it, don't point it at anything you don't want to clean though. Gene

I try to stay as far away from anything made by Campbell-Hausfeld as possible. It is really cheaply made stuff generally. I have a Generac with an AR pump and 6 horsepower Briggs & Stratton Intek engine. It has been a very good unit. Bought it from the Home Depot. It's rated at 2400 psi at 2.5 GPM. One thing I have learned about the lower priced washers is that most of the pumps have plastic parts which fail within the first dozen or so uses. I recommend one with an all-metal pump, which will cost more money, but will be worth it in the long run. I also have a 5000 psi pressure washer that I built using an old Wisconsin TJD two cylinder engine that I had which powers an AR 6 cylinder pump rated at 4.0 GPM. As another poster stated, don't aim the thing at anything you want paint left on! I use the smaller unit to clean things I want the paint left on and the larger one to clean stuff prior to painting. A comment about Honda engines..... I feel they cost more than they are worth. Give me a Briggs any day. My two cents. Regards..... .P

Wow!! Thanks for all the info. Does the Generac have the pump with metal gears? How do you find out before purchasing which ones have metal gears?
Thanks for all the help.

Hi Rem,

I bought a Notheren Tool, 10hp Tecumesh, 3000psi, 3gpm, varriable nozzle, extra nozzle, wet sand blaster, delivered to AZ for $710. Delivery was around $100.

Works good and will clean and remove paint if you want. T_Bone

I have the Home Depot B&S Generac. It does a good job. I was able to clean my old 530 Case Backhoe with it . Did a good job. Of course it is alot slower than a bigger machine. I would not go any smaller than the $300 dollar machines. This is a situation where more power is better. Hot water is not worth it. Years ago I worked in a garage that had a Steam Jenney. Not alot of pressure but that steam out cleaned any pressure machine, it was kerosene fired. I do not think steam will blast off loose paint.
