Smelled burning rubber this morning. Opened the hood and the clutch on the AC compressor was glowing red hot. Let it cool down and took the belt off. I know the clutch is shot. How do I tell if the compressor is good? When you grab the clutch you can't turn it by hand.

Thanks for all the info guys! The air wasn't working that great in it last summer. I can't afford to put that much money in it right now. Maybe I'll just get a shorter belt and bybass the pump. I graduate from tech college this spring, if I'm lucky enough to find a job maybe I can fix it then.

Are the front and back plates stuck together ?

I believe the part with the pulleys should turn freely on bearings unless the clutch plates are welded together. The front disc is the part that connects to the compressor shaft. If it is all stuck together, you will have to remove the clutch assembly to find out if the compressor is good. Special tools required. Chances are the compressor is locked up. Bearings on the pulley part of the clutch could be locked, but not usually.

Thanks for the quick reply Ben. The outer pulley the belt rides in turns freely. You can tell that it is loose and worn. You can't turn the compressor by the front plate. Just looked looked up the price of a new compressor, $569.00. OUCH!!

Email me, can hook you up with a wholesaler. I used to think that because you had to "licensed" for ac work it was really high tech and needed lots of special stuff. No the case. It's not a/c that needs to be licensed, just refriderant (R12). Been doing my own repairs for 5 years now, then get a refridgerant tech to come out and pull vacuum on the system, then recharge. Last unit I changed out was on a tractor (7710), NH wanted $325 for compressor and $185 for clutches (both rebuilt). Got the whole thing new for $210 and the tech charged me $60 for the house call, the R134a, and the changeover parts.

Yep Crank, the compressor is locked up. I personally would not recommend buying a rebuilt compressor. I have been burned on them before, and they usually cost more than half the cost of a new compressor.

Look online You can probably find a better deal, but it will still be expensive.

Good luck

If the compressor is locked up, you must replace the condenser because the teflon in the compressor will be trapped in the condensor. If you dont the new compressor will burn up in about 50 miles trust me I have the scars. We run a a/c reoair shop and have been bit

Not sure you have to change condensor, but a good flush is definitley in order. You might consider adding an aux in line filter as well

Right you are Allen, Was not aware of the teflon, but quite often the compressor puts out scrap metal that will partially plug the condenser. Also change the dryer whenever you open a system up.

Thanks for the reminder Allen it has been about 12 years since I did automotive and heavy equipment AC. Not sure the compressors had Teflon in them then.

I think anyone can buy R134, but you need gauges, vac pump and know what you are doing or you can waste all of the money you spent on your parts and maybe be very dangerous to yourself. Best to have a pro draw the vac and charge it for you.

The reason to replace the comdenser is that teflon goes to the condenser then hardens you cant get it out sorry the only way to protect your new compressor is to do it right. NEVER USE A REBUILT ON A FORD

Thanks Allen,
I tried rebuilt compressors 2 times in my life. Burned both times...never again on any brand.
