I just bought a used oil heater for my shop to replace my wood heater. The recommendation is to use #1, but is it possible to use waster oil? I really just curious, but if it is possible I may experiment with it.

Thanks,

Bob, First I want you to know I am not trying to sell a furnace. I just want to pass on some info. SAE 40,SAE10-40, Waste oil,ATF, #2 fuel oil are what can be used in most all brands of waste oil furnace. They can all be dumped in the same tank.I know for a fact that they love ATF & hyd oil they burn clean. They don't like antifreeze or water. So if people give you oil make sure it is clean. Do a search on waste oil furnace there are several on the market. The less expensive just don't have all the whistle & bells and require more attention to get a good clean burn.Have fun FREE HEAT!!! Earl S.

My brother-in-law has a large auto salvage business and burns motor oil in a forced air system (designed and sold specifically for that purpose) in his dismantling shop. I do know that they initially had some problem with condensation but overcame that. It is also legal with the EPA to do this.

I was wondering about that too. I don't generate 100's of gallons of used oil to get a waste heater, & don't want the liability issues of collecting that much these days.

But, some diesel engines (before cat converters) allowed one to mix in some clean used engine oil with the fuel.

Could one add a gallon of used oil to 10 or 25 gal of heating fuel & make it work?

Hi paul,

I found that if you take the waste oil and premix it with a couple gallons of fuel oil then add it to the tank, you have less problems. Some oils will take alot of time to combine with #2 if not premixed.

I sell REZNOR waste oil furnace. 3 things the oil is pre heated and we have a on board air compressor, the other furnace co. use shop air. The nozzle flow is computer controlled for different oil viscosities. They have come a long way from the old drip type.
