Wire Storage Woes....Any Ideas?

Gents,
I usually keep about 100' of 12 gauge, 100' of 14 gauge, and lots of antenna, thermostat, CAT5, lamp cord and etc wire out in the shop for whenever I might need it. Problem is, I havn't found a good way to store it.

I thought about winding it up and putting it on pegs, maybe even keeping it in a tub, but it's always a big tangled up mess that need re-wound every time I look for something.

My shop ceiling is finished, so I can't hang it from hooks. I've even thought about a long suspended dowel, but the whole contraption weighs about a hundred pounds, and the wire that I need is always in the middle.

Any Ideas? Theories?

I'm going to combine several of your ideas and use a hanging rod for the large rolls and angled boxes and a shelf for the smaller stuff. I'm trying to mount it on the underside of a 8 foot loft, so I just gotta keep everything over forehead height!

I saw an interesting set up at a neighbors. He took large "Cheerios" boxes and left about a 1" lip from the top and cut off the box on an angle to the oposite bottom leaving a container like libraries use for magazines.
He arranged these on a 1 X 12 shelf and labeled each box with the kind of wire on the lip. Cheap and effective.

One way is to put the coil- preferably when it is new and in original packing- into a bucket that is about the same diameter inside as the wire coil is outside. Pull the wire as needed from the center of the coil. Carry the bucket to wherever the wire is needed. If you have space for this type storage, it works great. All this assumes that the wire is not on a spool.

TyRap them up then you can hangem on the cheap gun rack on the wall or when they get in the way you can throw them across the garage and they stay in a nice round coil. They stay compact and don't unravel when you tie them on both sides of the coil.

I do basically the same thing but use electrical tape to secure the rolls an put all the rolls in a large wooden box in the barn loft. Never any tangle problems as long as rolls are taped. I keep electrical tape everywhere for securing things temporarily.

Hi Scott,

Take a piece of 1" pipe with 4" disc's cut from 14ga with a 1" center hole to seperate the wires. Make a pair of hanger brackets from 2x2x1/8" angle with 1" holes for the pipe. This spins all the wire at one time when you need one but if you drill a 3/16" hole in the disc lip then the others won't unroll when spun.

If you really got alot of time then make each roll spin independantly from each other on the pipe. The larger the wire size the larger the roll needed.

I use cheap plastic wall mounted garden hose holders for nearly everything. Have 100 feet of air hose on air hose reels. The BEST money I ever spent there. No more kinked tripped over or dirty hoses lying on the floor. Takes seconds to wind them up on the reels while holding a rag. For the 300 feet of hose I keep for working away from the shop I hang that over the garden hose holders. ( 400 feet away from the compressor tank will bog down air tools. I wheel out my 100 pound sandblaster empty and use it at the end of the hose for a remote tank..) Have taken to using them for eveything. V-belt storage, wire & leed cord storage cause there is no breakdown on the resting point like when I was hanging stuff on a peg...

two serious shelf brackets screwed to ceiling joists...(across a couple of joists 3-4') one piece of 1/2 or 3/4" rigid conduit or 3/4 solid rod ...put a few rolls on this one... do another next to it on two or three more joists... or right behind it... you don't need to put all the wire on one pipe..

or

find an old bread rack or bakers cooling rack salvage... shelves are slide out pans.. put 4 or 5 spools in a pan... a few more under on the next pan... slide out pan to get what you need..

or

fab up a rack something like a rack for holding music CDs.. with a back rod a bottom rod and a front rod in a 90� configuration... mount it to the wall or cabinet.. stand the reels up in the rack and pull off what you need...

I'm still thinking..
