I purchased an old Forney AC welder at an auction a few years ago. It is a Forney Model F225 with 12 heat stages (25 to 225)..... .six plug-ins on the front with two other plug-ins for hi and low. Anyone know anything about this welder? When was it manufactured? It is simple and compact, but seems to do a fine job.

Thanks!

MY FRIEND HAS A FORNEY AC/DC ARC WELDER MODEL #
F 260. IT HAS A " U " SHAPED BAND FOR "AC", AND A " U " SHAPED BAND FOR " DC ".AT THE TOP OF THE FRONT, IT HAS OUTPUT CABLE MARKED "TO GROUND OR AMP"," NEG "," POS ",AND THE OTHER OUTPUT CABLE
MARKED "TO GROUND OR AMP".NEAR THE BOTTOM IT HAS THE THREE SELECTIONS " LOW,MED,HI " FOR THE PORT SELECTIONS.NOW OUR QUESTION IS :" HOW DO YOU KNOW OR SELECT " AC " OR " DC " VOLTAGE ? NO MANUAL, AND HE SAID THERE WAS NO OTHER INFO ANYWHERE ON THE UNIT.I INSIST THAT IT IS SIMPLE, BUT WE COULD'T FIND ANY OTHER SWITCH, AND THE SELECTION {AMP}PORTS ARE LOCATED IN BETWEEN THE "AC" & "DC" BANDS. ANY HELP ON THIS AND MNF. DATE WOULD BE APPRCIATED !! AND I'LL GET THE EGGS READY TO PUT THEM ON MY FACE. THANK YOU !!

I have a Forney 32 volt welder that I still use. It's powered by a 16 hp. Kohler engine driving an old Princess Auto surplus generator, which is hooked to the welder.Everything is on a small trailer to make it portable.I wouldn't be without it.

I just picked up a 180 model. Since I'm new to welding I'm looking for a manual for it. It's in very good condition, and came with a whole bunch of rods. I've read good things about Forney, at least their old stuff.

Yes Brad, I think they did make a welder in a wood box. Pretty sure I saw one once, but the memory is getting old and I could be wrong. Early fifties Forney was getting bigger and bigger. Buildings were 1 by 12 board with tar paper covering. Fumes from shellac tank caugh fire...I was there and watched it burn. Biggest fire ever in Fort Collins. Semi truck full of new welders at dock burned too. He rebuilt into the firm that every one knows. What I never hear of is the fact that he built DC welders from surplus Air craft generators and Wisconsen 2 cylinder engines. They were real hot ouitfits and were popular out in the country where we did not have electicty yet. I would guess that that was got him started. A real success story. I have no idea what the company amounts to now. I think just on paper. Not unusual at farn auctions here for an old buzz box...20 to 30 dollars. Still one of the best made. Very few farmer that did not have one. Kenny in Colorado

I recently purchase an antique welder and am trying to find out it's maker. None of the replies mentioned anything about a wood box on the Forney. Do any of you know if they made a welder with a wood box, cause if they did, I have one. Not in the best of shape, some wood missing and no name on it, that I can find. Any ideas appreciated. Brad

Tab, I just picked up one of those myself. I Called Forney North America. They sent me a copy of the operators and the sales brosure. The Op manual is very vague. I can't complain, the welder only cost me 6 bucks! Mint condition too.

6 bucks!!!! Wowsers!!! I had to pay $50 for mine, but I think I'll put it up against a Lincoln buzzbox any day! :-) I found out BTW, that they were made in the late 50's/early 60's.

I've got a 225 Miller about 25 years old and a 225 Forney about the same age (variable heat range, crank on top) and I like the Forney better, seems smoother. Our local True-Value and Big-R stores have Forney accessories and will order welders if you ask. I use a lot of their stuff and am happy with both the price and serviceability.

I had a Forney 225 welder. It went through a barn fire and then a D6 Cat drove over it cleaning up the ashes. It never worked right after that!!! Sure do miss that welder. I worked it three hours straight one night resurfacing a plow at high heat just as fast as I could put rod on.

Is it true they are still selling welders? I had heard they went bankrupt in the 70's, maybe it is time for a welder.

what website did you use to post your question about your Forney welder? I have an old Sears welder with the leads missing. I've been told that Forney made Sears welders for a number of years.

I don't know if there are more models, but all the Forney welders I've seen recently were just your average 110V Chinese imports.

I don't like the sound of that! I'll check at the T-Value and see if they can give me some specifics (like country of origin and are they still copper-wound) on Forney.

Forney Industries is located in Fort Collins, Colorado. They made welders and the Aerocoupe airplane.

My Dad bought a 180 back around 1956 when Forney was sending salesmen around selling their welders to farmers here in upstate NY. He used it for years and my Mom sold it after he died. In the meantime (around 1969) I picked up a used 1964 180 for $50 and I'm still using it regularly. They are well built (copper wound) and Forney is still in business. Central Tractor used to handle Forney welding supplies.

I owned a Forney in the 1960's, it was old then and worked fine. I had to sell it when I went out of farming, I've kicked myself a thousand times for letting it go.
