Hi, I need to replace a P.S. hose. The origional hose has a 3/8 steel line on each end of the hose. I can get an off the shelf hose with a mail pipe thread on each end. I was going to use a standard plumbing 45 degree flair and nut fitting, to join the pieces. But I have heard I should use a JIC 37 degree flair. Which is better, is the 37 a double flair and does it take special tools? What the heck is it? Help! Thank You Mike

Parker Hannifan used to have a listing for fittings to fix your problem.

Hi Mike,

The double flair takes a specical flair tool. One starts the single over then the other finishs it. Brake lines also use the double flair as it will hold more pressure. You can buy fittings to adapt to anything. Have you tried NAPA?

Have you tried the tractor/vehicle dealer for a new one? If the steel ends are still in good condition, you might take the assembly to a shop that makes new hydraulic hoses and ask if they can put a new hose on the old fittings. I wouldn't use ordinary pipe fittings as I think the pressure is too high . They could fail, causing injury or maybe just a big mess. A guy at work had a forklift hose break; it forced the fluid under the skin on his hand or arm and required a trip to the emergency room.

I wanted to use the origional steel ends because the tractor is an industrial and the steel ends would be a real bear to remove. Thank You Mike

Mike .. Are you saying the fittings are a bear to remove from the tractor, or to remove from the ends of the hose? If it's the tractor, time, patience, penetrating oil, and the right tool will do the job. If it's the hose, a hydraulic hose repair shop is equipped to do a factory job and put new hose between the fittings. They don't like the customer doing part of the work in hopes of saving some $$. Let them do it all and they will be responsible if the work fails.

Hi Slowpoke, The steel ends are long and wraped around and through a lot of parts! I would have to take appart an awful lot of tractor to get them off. Was trying to replace the hose without taking the thing appart. Thanks,Mike
