I bought a set of Hinsdale sockets with a hex key handle and I have been searching for info on it too. Apparently there is little about the company. I bought a set of Frank Mossberg sockets made in about 1914 and there was a fair amount of info on that company.

There is another source you should try,www.mjdtools.com
They have antique tool auctions all the time. They go by the term 'Live free or die' antique tool auctions due to the state they live in.

I will check it out and as an old tool afficionado you should too.

You can check out our other hobbies at the url below, shows our antique phonographs and links as well as our old cars and their links as well.

While you are at it, those of you that like old cars and phonographs will enjoy the CD we compiled of the first automobile recordings. You can buy a copy from the links there too. Commemorates the history of early automobiles from 1903 thru 1928 in music and recorded speech. A great compilation.

My sister bought a house that was built in 1947 and, while cleaning out the garage, found an old set of large sockets. The metal box they were in is labeled "No. Hinsdale G20" with a second line of print barely-visible that appears to say "Made in U.S.A."

Of the roughly 40 sockets in the set, about 16 are hex-drive and the rest are square drive. Finally, there are two extensions, both hex drive; one of them is also necks down for smaller sockets.

Where can I find more about this set and the company that made it?

Thanks,
Rodger Fields

pj --

As I understand it, Hinsdale was a Chicago-based maker of high-quality wrenches. Their trademark was an H surrounded by a Circle, and they were in operation pretty much between WWI and WWII. I've never heard how far back the company actually went, nor why the finally shut their doors for the last time.

There is a longstanding rumor that Hinsdale was Sears-Roebuck's original contractor for Craftman-brand wrenches . . . apparently some of the first-generation Craftsman wrenches were stamped with a little mark that either is or looks like a Circle-H.

You might try posting your question at some of the old-car bulletin boards; there was some discussion of Hinsdale on the now-defunct Tool Source Tool Talk board a few years ago, and as I recall it was the Model A buffs who knew about Hinsdale tools.

Another place to post your question would be Mark Kw's Inside Tools board, for which I am attaching a link.
