Anyone care to comment on the effectiveness of these, I saw one at my local parts place but haven't had any dealings with them, got an old International diesel that needs help in cold weather.

I have used a magnetic heater with some success on the intake manifold not too good below -20, my 6 cents worth, ray

They do work, but not nearly as well as those that go in the cooling system (Freeze plug). I use them along with the in block system. Now I'm talking about -30* to - 60*. If we get a visitor with no plug in we stick the oil pan heater on.

The other thing is when it's that cold - try to stay home!

The magnetic pan heaters will keep the oil in the pan warm enough to crank over good but like someone else pointed out they don't help to warm the heads and intake maifold at all like a water-jacket heater does. Since you've got problems with an air-cooled I would go with either the magnetic pan heater or the dipstick heater for the oil and I'd keep a high -powered eletric heat-gun or hair dryer handy and run it into the inake for a few minutes to take the frost off the plugs in really cold weather. We used this method on Wisconsin V/4s and THD twins in Gunnison, Colo. (usually one of the coldest spots in the country) and the warm air from the heat-gun really helped. One thing I found out over there was never use starting fluid on a gas motor when it's down around zero....frosts the plugs RIGHT now! Hope this helps you out.

I agree with Farmer Gene. The heater isn't totally useless, just almost. Besides, it isn't the oil you are trying to keep or get warm, it's the head and cylinders. Go with a block or a tank heater. Guess this makes it 4 cents :-)

Save your money. I got one for Christmas a few years back and thought it would be just the ticket for my winter work tractor. Wouldn't heat the oil pan let alone the oil in it. Put a good tank heater on it and you'll be much happier. My 2 worth.

A lower radiator hose heater or a tank heater or frost plug heater would work alot better then a magnetic heater. I had one once and was not impressed. They might work ok for a small engine.
