I used a product made by Castrol that is available in Walmart. It is relatively inexpensive, enviornmentally safe, and cleans well. I dilute it about 3/1. Not very good on your hands so I use rubber gloves. Happy Holidays! Jim

I've used the soil based fluids (Soy Gold) in parts cleaner. Not cheap to buy. I'm not that impressed with the degreasing qualities of the stuff. Mineral spirits work better for getting grease off parts. The Soy Gold has a low odor and leaves an oily coating on the parts (not necessarily bad).

When this soy fluid is fully contaminated, I think I'll buy the low odor mineral spirits.

I just run varsol in mine. When it gets dirty enough ( it took 4 years for the 1st batch), it goes to a friend who runs it through on of those used oil furnaces.

Not to disparage wives or goods from the Far East, but I learned the hard way that the plastic used in the pumps in those cheap Chinese parts washers gets dissolved in mineral spirits.

If she bought it at Harbor Freight, or through some non-brick-and-mortar Internet supplier, be careful what you put through it.

You will have little more than a 20 gallon rectangular soaking tank if you try to use strong petroleum solvents like paint thinner with the cheap pumps.

I bought my parts washer at one of the side-of-the-road traveling tool peddlers. It's made in China. I put mineral spirits in it. It's almost a year old now, and the pump still works fine. Only problem is the switch. It self-destructed after about a month. I bypassed it, so I have to pull the plug to shut it off.
BTW the 20 gallons will fill it to the top. I bought 14 gallons of mineral spirits and it was over the top of the shelf.

The very best I've found is a product called "Super Agitene" it sold by WW Grainger for one.. it is a petroleum based product but is very user friendly.. Nice to your hands and no bad smell that stays with you for days..

It's a little expensive.. around 50 bucks for 5 gallons.. I have a small cleaner and 5 gallons was just enough.. but I'd have to think about buying 20 gallons... that gets into my truck project money a little too much... :-)

The politically correct answer is to use water based concentrate available from most parts houses. Actually it works good and IS enviromentally safer than Kerosine or Diesel fuel.( Nudge,Nudge,Wink,Wink)

And it is Carcenogenic to boot! The contact hazzard is mostly skin contact and vapor inhilation of the fluid! Perchlorethyline (Perc) is NOT somthing you want to use to wash parts! DO NOT!

Agree with that. There is a building here in town that used to house a dry cleaning co. In the days before the EPA regulated that stuff, the dry cleaner would just dump it into a drain and down in the ground it went. It polluted a large part of our water supply, so much so that three municipal water wells had to be shut off. The EPA is supposed to be cleaning up sometime in the near future; with the way they do things, it won't happen for 200 years. lol
