Don't know about the larger Briggs engines, but I had one of the older cast-iron types that smoked like crazy, it was on a garden tiller and I called it my tiller and fumigator. Anyway, the problem turned out to be that someone had removed the tin baffel inside the valve chamber that is located under the little plate behind the carb. If you look in there, there should be a little "u" shaped pressed steel baffel along with the valve stems. Sure changed my old engine around when I put one in there. The mosquitos liked it better too.

Good point Richard, That would definately cause the problem. Did not think of that.

Check the crankcase breather; the fiber disc should not move in & out more than .030" to .040".
Someone may have stuck a finger in it one time and now it cannot close & produce a vacuum in the crankcase.
I found many of these while teaching Vocational Small Engine mechanics for 30+ years.

If it does not have too much oil in it. It could be bad. Too much blowby will force the oil out thru the breather into the carb. Many of these non commercial grade Briggs can be blown in a very short time if they are run while low on oil. If it lookd like blowby is the cause, you might try re-ringing it. Probably wont get it back to new running, but might keep it running for quite a while.

Too much oil in the crank case might cause some to get into the pcv valve that is connected to the carb on some motors.

Also, check to make sure the air cleaner/air passage isn't blocked (air cleaner is now probably full of oil too).
