How do I install a drill press chuck

I bought a Cal Hawk drill press at a flea market. When I unpacked it the chuck was not on the spindle and there are no threads to screw it on. The owners manual is a poor translation from China but there is nothing that even remotely describes how to put the chuck onto the spindle. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I bought a Delta 8" two years ago. The chuck has a taper fit. It kept falling off. I finally clamped a drill bit in my vise grip and stood it up under the spindle and with the spindle turning I bored a hole in it so I could thread it for a 1/4" allen type set screw. I then bought a chuck with a taper fit and fitted with a set screw. End of problems.

My drillpress had the male taper on the spindle, a bear to remove a chuck. but the new chuck, 33 jacobs female taper is just a press on fit.

Good comments from all.I would first look at the end of the spindle shaft( male jac taper) and see if there is a threaded hole there thru the center. Why I mention this is because you got it from a fm and it was a CalEquip deal. Back aways they got stuff from Taiwan which was a cut above motherboard(thxbill)China. In addittion to cleaning off the cosmo and noting any burr you want to locate a left-hand thread screw which was included if applicable and insert thru fully opened chuck once cleaned parts are mated.

JohnF --

As others have said, the chuck most likely has a female Jacobs taper that either fits a male Jacobs taper on the bottom of the spindle OR the spindle has a female taper (most likely a Morse taper) and you'll need a double-male-taper adapter (an arbor) to install the chuck onto the spindle.

These taper systems works well, but it's vital that the mating male and female tapers be smooth and clean. A little burr or bit of oil will either keep the tapers from holding or -- it you can get them to hold together at all in that configuration -- will cause them to pop apart easily.

Use a stone (machinist's term for a sharpening stone) or a very fine file to remove any burrs from the male taper and then clean it with a clean rag and alcohol. Then inspect and clean the female taper before inserting that matching male taper. A soft-face hammer or piece of wood can be used to seat the taper.

Presumably your press has a Morse taper. Just to add to the earlier posts:

For large holes, you can install a Morse tapered drill directly into the spindle in place of the chuck.

Your drill press should come with a small wedge that fits in the spindle slot. Use this to drive the chuck or tapered drill back out.

To install the chuck into the spindle, set a wooden block under the chuck, line the chuck up with the spindle and lower the feed handle until the taper is mated. Then tap the feed handle several times to jam the taper.

Be sure the chuck spindle tang lines up with the slot inside the quill (the part that come down when you operate the down feed handles). When it's down, you'll see a long slot through the quill and spindle that's used to remove the chuck or tapered bit. Place a drift or center key in the slot and tap with a hammer. The chuck will drop out.

you should be able to push the chuck on the spindle and tap it lightly and it will stay . the hole in the chuck and the spindle should be tapered ... this s a common way to attach chucks

I believe bill b va is correct. I once bought a drill press that was set up with a morse taper. I had to buy an adapter that had a male Morse taper on the top to fit the drill press spindle and another male taper on which to install the chuck. Presumedly, John's drill press spindle is fitted with a male taper that mates to the female taper of the chuck. Sometimes there is a nut on the spindle above the taper which is turned CCW against the chuck when it is necessary to remove it. I think the taper on the chucks is called a "Jacob's taper", named after that well known chuck manufacturer.
