Welding on square baler needles

Seems this is where all the welding experts hang out. Who can tell me exactly what kind of metal old New Holland baler needles are made of?

I would like to weld on them just enough to fill the groove that is created over time by the string. I can then use a dremel tool to correctly reshape the string holes.

Can I weld on the needles with a wire feed welder, or are they cast iron or something requiring special attention?

The wear on the end of the needle only causes
a problem when a knot from a splice of the new ball of twine gets hung up in it. Just file it out so the splice knot will go thru. No welding
needed. Also check all the twine guides for wear.

Once you get the worst of the groove filled.I think it would be a good idea to weld some Hard-Facing on the area that wears.... Brazing (brass) is too soft... Grind them smooth and you won't have to do it again..!!!

Hi James,

Sorry I can't help you here as I've never seen baler needles up close. From your post, they don't seam to wear out too often, I don't think a hard surface rod would be needed? Any comment tractor vet? Just learning here.

I have a neibor who is having good luck with a torch and some braseing rod. Seems to work well and is easy to float out smooth.
