Is there a simple way to quiet down a chainsaw. Thanks for any suggestions.

If you can't get a quieter muffler from the dealer,..... Screw a deflector onto the existing muffler outlet..directing the sound Down, away from your ears...It really helped my McColluch 380...!!! Packing some brass wool (loosely) into the muffler will also help....If there is room... You may have to make a screen to keep it away from the exhaust port.. You can get the Brass "Scrubers" for dish washing at any grocery store...Pull one apart...don't cut it, to keep the brass in a nice ball....

For safety reasons, you really should be using hearing protection, even for casual use.

Hi Ray,

Yep I worked my first 5yrs in the Sheet Metal trade in the shop where we had from 50 to 250 men working at a time and boy was that a noisy place. I always had to wear ear plugs and some times added ear muffs with ear plugs. Some of the older guys would make fun of me for wearing them but I would just say "HUH" and laugh. Now I'm glad I did wear them.

Check out the song "the lumberjack" by Jakyl; it's got a great chainsaw solo.
