Does anyone know of a device that will sound an alarm when outside current (or a single circuit) fails? I can visualize a small (calculator-sized?) device that plugs into a receptacle in the home. When a power outage occurs on a stormy night, and I'm sound asleep, this device's buzzer(?) will alert me to start my generator and restore power to the sump pump keeping my cellar from flooding (again). I've tried Grainger's and a couple of local electrical supply house to no avail. I can probably make one (I think) but seems like such a device must already exist. What say you? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger

Some are readily available out there. In Texas, some Septic system are required to have a power failure alarm and an overfull alarm. Mine has a little box that plugs into a 110v outlet and when the power goes off the little sucker screams pretty loud. It's about the size of a pack of smokes (King Size).

I ordered one from Cutler Supply- I feel more confident with that route.
Thanks again!

I've seen lots of cheap battery powered emergency lights that plug into a 120 v recep. when the power goes off the light comes on.. Find on at Walmart and replace (or add to) the light a Sonar- alert type alarm.. they work from about 6 volts to 24 volts and are about the size of a cigarette lighter.. you'll have some light in the dark and a alarm for power outages..... works on the same principle as the relay mentioned before..

Use a cheap power supply to hold a relay open.
Use the normally closed contacts wired thru a dc battery to a Sona-lert or other noisy device. When the power goes off the relay closes and makes the buzzer or horn go off. Need continus duty relay. Just make sure it is wired to the same phase as your sump pump.

Hi Roger,

Take a cheap Radio shack 6/9v electronic buzzer, 9v battery and some wire. Wire one negitive lead from battery direct to where you want the water level sensor, strip that end of the wire about 3/8", tack down. Take the battey positive lead to one side of the buzzer, take another lead from the buzzer to the water level sensor, strip one wire end 3/8" and tack down, thus a series circuit is made. The two bare wire ends are the sensors.

When the water rises to the wire leads it completes the ciucuit thus sounds the buzzer/alarm.

I've used this simple circuit to tell the depth of a water in a well at 1000ft. From time to time you need to trim the wire ends as they will corrode, or clean them, but leave extra wire at the sensed water level for cleaning.

This simple circuit then can be added to automatic start the generator if you wanted.

I have an APC power backup for my computer. It has an alarm which goes off when there is the slightest power blip. Get something like this and you can have power backup to shut your computer down and have a power failure alarm all in one unit. Just don't get too upset when it wakes you up in the middle of the night.
