I have been checking out different sources on the
subject of how strait a boring bar should bore
to 90 degrees of the crank.I have been told no more than .001/inch of travel.some have stated
tolarances of .0002,.0003 is this figure per inch
or the total length of the cylinder.what is true
for a boring bar?

What kind of boring bar do you have? Are you just clamping to the top of block or are you running off a boring stand. Who gave you .0002 to .0003 spec top to bottom??? I can get you with the bar manufacture if you need the factory spec.If you are clamped on top you can bore a hole reverse the direction of the bar and take a light cut in same hole that will tell you if the bar is off.But repeat centering is tough also. How close is the deck of your block with the main brg. bore? Have you corrected that??Earl

Thank for the reply Earl.My bar is a Van Norman
944s.the specs are from some shops over the internet that are selling boring sevices.
they don't state if the specs are per inch or over
all the lenght of the bore. The bar is in a boring stand which is home made.I made my cylinder check
with a dial indicator and a drill mill with the
cylinder true on the table and the dial indicator
positioned in the quill.I am know about rotation
the cylinder 180 degrees.I am using the mill as
a check after final boring to track variances
in the each bore job.
