My compressor uses a solberg type air filter. can these be cleaned, if so how?? And are there any better filters out there i could put on mine? Sounds lie this filter is restricting the pump some. If i pull it of while running it gets a different sound.. This is a campbell hausefeld vt series pump air compressor. Any help appreciated..

The little filters do a good job and are plenty good for a compressor, I pay about $3.00 for the new filters.

I bought an air compressor once that didn't have a filter on it. I scrounged up a filter from an old John Deere combine and modified it to fit on the air pump. It didn't have a decent filter in it so I cut off a long strip of furnace filter, rolled it up, put it in the proper place and it's been there every since. I guess if it gets dirty, I'll do it again. I don't think it is very restrictive. L8R....Fred OH

Chris: I think the different sound when filter is removed is somewhat normal. As there is a small amount of restriction with the filter as any type filter. place in mind when you used to run the old automobile without a filter.
I would just stick with the filter brand that came on it.

Solberg filters are very common on air compressors. Replacement filters are available, and, at least in my opinion, are reasonably priced. I change the elements in my two compressors with Solberg filters every year. Cleaning them is not an economical activity. Sometimes they can be partially cleaned by simply tapping the filter on a hard object and knocking out the loose debris. Using air is not recommended since it can damage the filter media. Solberg filters are also silencers, so when you remove the filter and run the compressor, the sound will change (it will run somewhat louder). Solberg filters will not cause a restriction in the intake stream unless it is plugged up. Again, in my opinion, spending $25 or so a year for filters is a cheap situation compared to what I have invested in compressors. If you buy good equipment, service it as recommended by the manufacturer, and make sure all the safety devices are working properly, an air compressor should last a lifetime. Regards..... P
