I am looking for a decent air compressor. I won't be needing it for real heavy duty use, so I just need a good one, not a heavy duty. Right now, I am eyeing 7hp, 60gal. uprights. Cambell, and porter cable, both have one, and I am not sure which to go with.

Cambell: 11.8@40psi, and 10.3@90psi

Proter: 12.2@40psi, and 9.7@90psi

Both are within $25 from eachother. Any advice??

7HP will be a peak rating for a few seconds before the smoke leaks out of the windings.Likely 2 or 3 HP continous. A real cast iron pump, quality bearings, safety controls are issues. A bolted down vertical pumps is difficult to steal but requires lots of airline and isn't portable. No one ever purchased a aircompressor with too much capacity at 125 psi.

Dan.... What are prices? If you can pay a little more, get more volume. Bigger is better when it comes to air compressors. Above mentioned are fine for tires, spray painting, air wrenches, cleaning. The big jump comes when you start sand or bead blasting. 40 psi is too low, 90 is much better. With 10-11 cfm you will probably have the compressor running full blast trying to keep up. It will take 3-5 minutes to fill the 60 gal tank if you run it all the way down. I think most hobby sandblast equipment dealers will recommend 15 cfm min. If you can you find a nearly new used one like I did, you'll save some $. I found an IR 8/2002 model, 7-1/2 h, 24 cfm @ 175 psi, 80 gal from a shop, that was closing. Paid $700; new out the door is $1900. Of course it draws 27 amps so you need to consider power useage.

Thanks. I know I will not need it for sand blasting and such. This is just for my home: tires, some painting, cleaning, stuff like that. The 60 gal tank is probably even too much, but the price for smaller tanks are only $40 cheaper, so I might as well go bigger, like you said. But I think 60 should be more than enough. Prices are around $389.

I just want to make sure I get a good brand. All the Roland products are overpriced where I live, so it seems like it is between the porter and the cambell.

Dan,I probally go with the Campbell Hausfell. Some of my friends have bought the little cast iron pump models with good luck.Doing the ezact same type of work you want to do.I have a nice Curtis two stage 5 hp that is a very nice and quiet compresser.I still borrow his for time to time, and it works fine.Campbell same like a good value for the money.I also like some of the emglo compresser, but lots more money. Some of theirs are real quiet.

Hi Dan.

I bought a IR 60gal [email protected], 3hp ball bearing, from Northern Tools a couple years ago, $530 delivered. I see there $599 delivered now. Low oil shut off and auto water drain.

Can't comment on how it works as it's still in shipping container :)

Yes, I need help too. But what size would I need to run air tools? And maybe a spray gun to paint? Nothing too too expensive.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

A 60gal tank has 8cft of air storage.
60galx231=ci/1728=cft

Look up the cfm and psi requirement of your typical air tools that your going to use. Add 50% and that will be close to what you need in compressor cfm output.

Usually only sand blasting causes an excessive demand on a typical air compressor but if your not in a hurry then a smaller compressor will work for you.
