I have some kero that is three or four years old. It has sat outside in a plastic jug. I did not know if it would still be good.. I don't want to mess up a new wick in my heater.. Any info appreciated..

Kerosene does go bad over time, volitilty degrades and water and fungus accumulate.Old "stale" or moisture laden kero is tha fastest way possible to contaminate and DESTROY the wick in your heater.Kero should be kept in dedicated, sealed container in cool dark place and used within 6 mos of purchase.Click on link below for Mannings, supplier of Kero heaters, wicks, parts and service. There is very good info on heater care, repair, troubleshooting etc for Wick type heaters there.Have dealt with them for several years.

I don't know if it goes bad, but you can put it in your parts washer with Gunk Super Concentrate, and use it up that way.

Dennis,
I like your idea about the parts cleaning fluid. I have about 10 gallons of old (3 years) kero, and my parts washing 5 gallon bucket is as dirty as the Red River. What is the exact description of the "Gunk Super Concentrate" and where can I find it? Does it mixed with kero cut old grease and grime good as the prepared solutions? My original 5 gal is some type of Berryman liquid. Thank You

You can find out a lot about all Gunk products at www.gunk.com. They have a link you can search by state to find who sells Super Concentrate. Any parts store can order it, and the better ones, like those who have a shop affiliated with the parts store, should have it, try NAPA, the Advance Autoparts down the street from me doesn't seem to know what it is. I've used it since 1970 or so. It is safe to use, and cuts grease, grime, and sludge real good the heaver the grease you might want to scratch x's in it to start the soaking process. You can pressure wash the parts with water to remove the dirt, it is supposed to be water soluable. You can pressure wash it at a self serve car wash. It is made to be mixed with kerosene. A few years ago I bought a quart, as they were discontinuing the 1 quart size to degrease an engine I was rebuilding in the basement. The smell of the degreaser really bothered my wife, so you might want to use it away from the house. Incidentally I found that I couldn't scrub enough to get rid of the smell, and my wife couldn't wash the smell from my clothes, but I was able to put roll on deodorant on my hands and clothes and the deodorant would remove the odor so that it could be washed out, but you want to wash everything first. I don't remember the ratio they recommend, but I put a gallon of SC in a 5 gallon bucket about 2/3 full of kerosene.

Hi Tom,

In my past experience, once you used the Berryman you won't like anything else as it out cleans all other cleaners. I would try a small amount and see which does the best. I bet the Berryman wins.

Hi Dennis,

Have you tried any of the orange citrus hand cleaners? That will usually take away any petrolum smell.

I haven't tried the citrus hand cleaners, but my wife has used kitchen cleaners with it, and she likes it. I'll have to give it a try.

For the price of the kero, I wouldnt use it in the heater. Thinks you can find another use for the old kero.

Since the amount of kerosene you have is not great, buy new for the heater. Use a clean can and use a filter funnel. Use the old stuff for washing dirty parts.

I don't think it goes bad 'cause it's an oil.
