just used my Gallagher smartfix electric fence tester/locator. found a short in 15 minutes that may have taken me hours to find. it measures voltage, amperage flow on a wire and the direction of any shorts (to the left or right). it must be magic.... but it cost too much, about $100 and at that price it should be waterproof but is not. just thought i'd drop a dime on the product.

Worked telephone cable in military long ago. Different equip, but method the same. First drive the line & look for physical damage. Next test at half-way point, whether the line is 100 feet or 10 miles. Get a signal, move toward the end. No signal, back up toward power source. Keep cutting the distance in half. On undergound lines can test a 10 mile run with digging about 10 test holes , get within 6 inches of trouble. On overhead only have to climb about 10 poles. Example-1000 foot run, test at 500, then 250, 125,60,30,15,etc.

As always I envy those who have these types of testing equipment so for those of us that are stingy could you give a comparison to the old pocket knife /screwdriver or hands on method.

when you have a mileor more of fence or a multi wire electric fence and have a short you can spend MANY hrs. troubleshooting the problem and if you are relying on it to keep your livestock in or predators out.... what is your time worth ? Pocketknife/screwdriver is only a go/no go guage.

KENCOVE FENCE has the Stafix fault finder/voltmeter. I think it is $80 . Simply touch the single probe to fence and go. Works well.Use it often!
