I am building a compressor with a gas engine to power it. Guys on this board tell me that gas compressors are usually unloaded when the pressure reaches the max and the unit runs with no load. The pump I'm using comes with automatic unloading heads. The people I got it from tell me I need a pilot valve to set when the heads unload. What is a pilot valve? How does it work and how does it control the compressor pump? I'm at a bit of a loss.

They are also sometimes called a "trigger valve", when the air pressure in the tank overcomes the resistance of the spring in the pressure controller( high set point of pressure in the tank), thr trigger/unloader valve piston or diphragm shifts and opens up a port to let air pressure into a small line that is connected to the intake valve cover, there the air pressure pushes against a piston or a diphragm that is connected to some fingers that hold the intake valve open, thus allowing the compressor to freewheel until the air pressure drops to the cut in pressure which lets the valves close when the pressure drops and it begins pumping air again. These are also found on large 3phase industrial type compressers which move a lot of air, it avoids stopping and starting large electric motors.. Gene Davis
