In easy steps.
#1. Get a 2 stroke that calls for 20:1 mixture. Note: This proceedure was tested using a 1972 Ski-Doo Olympique 335 others will be similar.

#2. Test Amsoil synthetic 2 stroke oil. Use a 60:1 mixture, only mix one gallon.

#3 Run out of gas. Preferably miles from home, and/or anyplace you could convieniently mix up some of that nice Amsoil.

#4 Refill with 50:1 mix of conventional oil.

#5 Decide that the conventional at 50:1 is just as good as the Amsoil.

#6 Go for a good hard run. Preferably ending up miles from home. Always ride with a buddy, but make sure his sled is too small/light to comfortably tow yours, it'd help if his isn't running particularly well either, maybe it should die when it idles.

#7 If you notice the engine making funny noises, be sure to ignore them. Pass if off as belt slap or clutch noise.

Oh yes ladies and gentlemen, I've ruined a 2 stroke top end. Coincidentally now I know what a 2 stroke without enough lubrication sounds like. It goes "ting, ta ting ting" like the sound a loose belt slapping a snowsled clutch makes. Or if you had a screw or something in the exhaust...

Still the Amsoil was good stuff, and I'll try it again once I break in the new top end.

I haven't heard any more from the guys on here touting thier 2 cycle oil that used the same mixture for every 2 cycle engine and ratio. Perhaps they too have found how.

Well some closer inspection reveals I might have had the carb set a bit lean too. Still I think I'll stick with the Amsoil from now on. Its more expensive, but I'd run 60:1 with that in everything, no worries.

OOOPS!! I had a mouse take my sled outta' comission about a mile from civilization once. That mouse nest in the intake shroud in my fan cooled sled made liquid outta one piston pretty handily! I always check the intakes every winter now....live an' learn..... good luck!

More OIL= more power. ask Gordon Jennings (tec. ed. for car and driver and one of the motorcycle mags he also designed aircraft engines durring the war.)

This is why I do not experiment on my 2 cycle engines with the mix or type of oil. My boat, chain saws, etc get exactly what the manufacturers call for. Not necessarly the same brand, but type and ratio. I have had good luck on all of them. If my plugs tend to foul I just get a bit hotter plug and keep the mix the same. Ahh... nothing like the smell of outboard oil first thing in the morning. You know what they say... a bad day fishing is better than..... .

I saw a YZ 125 water cooled that quite running and wouldn't start. After pulling the plug i noticed an odd silver powder in the plug. Low compression.

Dealer ship mechanic looked at it and said "let me guess, you have been using brand xmaco gas.

His theory was the alcohol/water content caused the fuel/oil to serperate from the additive/h20.

I use a small amount of extreme pressure/ anti-friction additive in my two strokes one tank each spring.
Run the weed eater wide open all the time. Even after several tanks I can still smell the chemical reaction from the treatment in the exhaust.
