Hi, I found this this board while doing a search for a welder. What would be the best welder I can get for around $800 be? It won't be used for anything real heavy, mainly body work and some light fabrication in my own garage. The heaviest stuff I would weld would be 1/4 to 3/8 with it. Anything thicker, I have an arc for. Thanks for any help.

I have a HTP welder that I like real well. You might want to check it out, they are from somewhere around Chicago. They have welders for muffler shops and body shops. The reason I like mine is for the smooth arc. They have copper coils in the transformer which helps.Ive run Millers and Hobarts, but this one is smoother.

Mike, the Lincoln sp175 plus has the best arc in the class bar none the miller 175 a joke.when welding with it it sounds like it going into labor. The miller rep bought in a Miller 175 in to my friends welding store, and was running his mouth about how great the new Miller was.My friend tried it out,and said it was the one of the worst welder he has ever welded with.He had a lincoln sp 175 plus hooked up,and he asked the rep if he has ever welded with one.He said no.My friend let him try it out,all the rep said was that does weld nice.He didn't say one more word about the Miller again. My friend that runs the welding store told me, He didn't know why they have to run their mouths about how great their new welders are?He said they should give him the line of bull, put them on the floor, and never plug them in.Same goes for the Miller 135 vs Lincoln sp135 plus.

I have own two miller 130s,one was a 130 xp.Also my friend left me a MM 185 for a whole year to use.I also had a esab migmaster 250 that I just sold, because I picked up a MK products mk2000a 300 amp pulse mig with a Lincoln LN9 GMA feeder.I also have a new 305G welding generator that also has a arc only Miller could dream about. The one thing that my welders have in common is that they all have a great arc.The lincoln sp175 plus just flat has the best arc in its welding range. Here is a link to aws site taking about lincolns vs miller in engine drives.See for yourself. I like miller welders, but when they put the bean counters before the welding arc thats where I draw the line. They have a long way to go before they even think about catching lincoln as far as the welding arc.Try the link.

Hi Mike,

I would stay away from the Hobarts as I was looking at a new one the other day. There still a cheap piece of junk and if the arc stability has not improved thats even worse.

Although Miller now owns Hobart, Miller has always built a very good Mig welder. Good quality with a very stable arc. Since Miller is close to the same price, I think it's the best bang for the buck.

Lincoln was always alittle behind Miller in Mig arc stability although they always were a quality built machine.

Hobart has their 175 amp on sale, Xmas Special.

Complete Mig with Regulator, Cart, and Complementary Auto Darkening Hood worth about $179. Bought mine last Xmas and I love it.

Mine was $649

Go with one of the big three, Lincoln, Hobart, Miller. You should be able to get for 500. 220volt. Search the net..
