Hi Kjm,

Yes it can but the next question will it hold much weight. Thats a hard one to answer depending if the base metal is cast iron or cast steel. Cast steel will take more pressure than cast iron. A vertical load on the stud would be best over a shear load or side load.

Next question is how far did the cast fracture when it broke out? When preping the base metal I would be looking for hairline fractures. You should see lines going away from the cast edges as your grinding. You want to look close and get them all.

How to weld? Determine what you have first, cast iron or cast steel. Look at the grain structure very close, 10x magnifiy if you have one, then post back.

I bought what I thought were cast steel chain hooks for my front loader bucket. One was cast steel and welded very well with 6013 but the other one didn't weld very good. Wally World was selling out for $1 eh so I bought a dozen.

Being the expert that I am, I proceded with shear load tests as described below and thought about x-ray testing.

I gave both the 4lb hammer side blow test when done :) LMAO
They both past under the above severe testing and held several 1000lb load tests. My x-ray eyes said they past inspection :)

Now that I've said that I'll go out a just touch one and it'll fall off :)

T-Bone Thanks for the reply, I`m sure it is cast it`s the rear housing on a D-17. I guess I`ll have a go at it and see what happens, it can`t be worse than it is now{you could stop by and show me how}HA HA. It broke out about 1/3 of the hole (3/4 bolt)
