I have a Lincoln wire feed 100 MIG welder. Anybody know if you can weld aluminum ex: Diamond plate? If so do I need any upgrades or accessories for this welder? Any info would be great. [email protected]

You will deffinately need a spool gun because you can't push aluminum wire that far. I have good results using straight argon gas. Ed

I do not know too much about mig welding. Although I can kick butt at oxy-acet, welding with 15% silfos used for copper in HVAC/R. Therefor the oxy-acet method really intrigues me. I am doing a 1927 T-Bucket frame off, and want to fab the floor board, firewall, gas tank, and interior panels out of plain aluminum diamond plate. (thickness' unknown at this time) Would the oxy-acet method work for me and if so what would I need to do this? Or if another way would be better, what kind of stuff should I be looking at to purchase, to do the job correctly? I am very willing to learn so all feedback will be very usefull to me. Thank you guys for all your help.

Try this site for info on mig welding. A spool gun is usually the tool needed to weld aluminum with most mig outfits.

I agree with T Bone and go the Oxy/Acet route if you have access to a torch. You will need flux, stainless steel brush to prep the area, and filler rod. I have welded more Aluminum sheet metal on Navistar trucks than I care to remember. If you can braze you can learn to do Aluminum.

Hi Bryan,

This not a good machine for welding Aluminum as it very low amperage so you would be limited to thin gauge metal. You would need a spool gun as the liner will become plugged in a short time from the pealing of the wire inside the liner. The AL wire is very soft and any tip resistance will cause the wire to ball on the feed rolls and is why spool guns are used, short distance to tip.

AL requires alot of arc stability thru the shielding gas and 25AR 75HE works well.

Ever consider using Oxy/Acet for brazing AL? Very easy to weld, good puddle control, and easy to get the high heat required of AL. You can use a piece of scrap AL for filler wire.

You will need a tank of co2 and of corse alu mig wire and a stainless brush, not steel. clean both parts with the brush, set the gas, you'll have to experament. and viola your welding aluminum.

I've read that the pros use a 'spool gun' which is a gun with an intragal spool holder for a small spool of wire. The al wire is too soft to push thru 10-12' of cable and can get jammed in the liner. They're expensive, about $700. With a small MIG welder the cables are probably 8' or less, so it might work ok.
I can't advise on the correct gas.
