Acetylene Regulator

I have a "homeowner" Prestolite torch set, been working dandy for years. The last couple of times I've used it tho, the acetylene regulator has been screwed up. Okay as long as gas is flowing (ie, the torch is lit) but as soon as I shut the torch off, the regulator pegs. Not wham-bam, but say 2-3 seconds after I shut the torch off, it starts creeping up until it pegs.

I know it isn't safe to use it this way. My question is, is it worth having it rebuilt, or should I just replace it and be done with it?

I found a brand new one on EBAY for $85.00 + $15.00 shipping. It includes all the hoses, torch, both regulators and several different tips.

EBAY Item #1873978542

I get a lot of stuff off of EBAY and this one looks legit.

Hi F14,

The low pressure check valve is leaking. There is a "O" ring cover gasket and a sping check valve with a seat material? The seat has dried up and cracked.

Son payed $60 for the Victor check valve and "O" ring. I think I'll look at leather on mine if possible and I have "O"rings.

It must me regulator month as my son just had to rebuild his Victor two weeks ago and mine started leaking last week.

Hi T-Bone

My Victor does the same thing. I was wondering if your son would tell me where he got the rebuild kit. Thanks

Hi Peter,

At the local welding supply shop. The guy repairs regulators so keeps the parts on hand although very expensive parts. I would try localy as you should be able to meet ot beat that $60 price. If you don't have any luck let me know and I'll get his phone number for you.

His was the journeyman regulators so there expensive two stage regulators.

Mine was a dirty check valve seat. I got lucky. The sons was cracked.

Note the e-mail addy as I don't post it often as spammers hit me hard.

Thanks, TBone. I guess the worst than can happen is I'll take it apart, and either fix it if I can get the parts, or wind up with a new one anyway.

Seems like a refurbish job by a dealer is only 60 to 80 bucks and they come back like new.
