I need help identifying some welding rods a friend of mine has just purchased. The tin has 5/32T-C1 31 on it. The rods are a dark brown (kinda a rust color) with three green dots on them. There are no numbers on the rods. TIA Neal

Reddish brown flux with 3 red dots is a E6010 5P electrode. They are intended for welding around pipe joints. If they've been damp they can be revitalized in the kitchen oven.

The 3 green dots give it away - the guys I used to work with in powerplants called them "P5" rods. I don't know the official name of them, but I recognize the 3 green dots. They're good rods - as long as you don't care how ugly the weld is. We used them on stuff that was too rusty to weld with anything thing else. Good for getting enough metal to have a starting place for a 7018.

P5 welding rod is 6010. I used to burn alot of it in the shipyards.Been so long ago I forget what the dot colors are anymore.I think it was made by Linclon and came metal cans.

Might not make any difference but Lincoln 6010 says 5P on the can.

Hi Neal,

Can't help much here. Been to many years since the color dot system was used. Brown flux would be iron powder probably a 7024 rod if the flux was fairly thick and 6010 if the flux is thin on some brands. I have some Lincoln 6013 with grey flux with 3 green dots.

they can eother be E6010 or E6011 or E7018. if they were in moisture they wouldent work as good.you might as well get new ones there like $3 for a pound.
