I've been sucessful in using a soldering iron to repair small holes in plastic. Tonite I tried to fix a 3 " crack in a industrial type plastic barrel. I used my soldering iron and propane torch. The plastic gets soft, buttery and just about to turn into a liquid when it starts to burn. I get the feeling that when it gets to the liquid state it becomes immflamable. Almost as if it goes from solid to gas and will not liquify. If I could get it to stay a liquid I could have just filled the crack easily, however The closet I get is to use it in the soft wax like stage . Has anybody got any advice in plastic repair. Thanks in advance. Al

If you know the distributor of your tank brand, they have a plastic string (looks like weeder trimmer string) that they use to fill the cracks or help slow down the leak down, also ask some farm stores that sell tanks, we deal with SNYDER tanks and they have fixed them for us with a large torch.

Tank/barrel should be marked somewhere with type of plastic its made from unless old. There are plastic"welding" kits available with instructions and various filler rods, also some special plastic repair"glues" out there.Heat gun may work better than hot metal or open flame on some compositions.
Talk to a radiator shop that does plastic radiator repairs.
##NOTE--Some plastics give off highly toxic and deadly fumes(similar to cyanide gas)when burned or overheated...use adequate ventilation and/or a respirator!

The plastic weld repairs I have seen done at work was on polyetheline. That is the most common plactic used,(milk bottles - buckets - gas containers -etc).The tourch they used was a small stream of hot air, soften the crack and melt in a very small strip of milk bottle.....Much the same way you would gas weld, except this was hot air....I used it one time to repair a crack in the drinking water tank on my motor home.....It was still holding after 6 years....
