tito, If you are trying to start a B&S it has to be a iron flywheel, or a blade or pulley on the shaft if it has an aluminum flywheel or it will shear the key.

I sheared 2 keys in a B&S 16 Hp before I got the nut tight enough, or is it a bolt? I finally used a long box end wrench on the nut and turned the engine to compression, then whacked the end of the wrench real hard with a no-bounce hammer. Do that about half a dozen times and you'll have it tight enough. Did you adjust the valves? If not it might help. With too much clearance the compression release mechanism won't work.

With outboard motors I have seen instructions that the flyheel nut should be torqued and it would be a good idea to use a non-hardening thread locking compound. When you inspect the nut after shearing, the key is the nut loose ?

Yes the nut has to be on tight and NO grease/oil on the tapered shaft or in the flywheel. I learned this lesson about 30 years ago.

Make sure the washer is back on right. You gotta really tighten the nut.

You have got to get the flywheel tight when you replace it. An impact wrench might help if you lower the psi as to not over tighten.

I believe that there is a cam lobe that opens and closes the points. If you removed this part during tune-up, make sure that it is not 180 degrees off. It's easy to put it on backwards.
