I bought these plates at a flea market. What are they? Each plate measures 36 1/4" long x 2 1/2" wide. What do the symbols mean? Thanks Guys

These are used by Jewelers to engrave things-trophys,watch backs, etc.
The large size makes them easier to trace with the stylus-the size is then reduced or enlarged to fit the object being engraved by changing the ratio on the engraving machine.
We had lots of different ones with many different fonts and symbols.
I have used these as well as smaller single character plates alot when I was a bench jeweler

John, when we discover what industry or organization uses those symbols , the purpose of the plates will become apparent. I think I will try some museums or fee appraisers, as I don't think we've hit on it here.

The plates are for use in a pantograph. A pantograph is basically a tracer. A stylus follows the path of the brass plates and a cutter is attached by means of a scissors mechanism which can be adjusted to make the letters/numbers larger or smaller.

Could they be shelf markers from an old library?

Want to have some fun?
Engrave some strange heiroglyphics on the plates.Take them out and bury them in a construction site where they will be dug up. Sit back and watch the fun people will have trying to decode the "ancient writings" LoL Ed

I agree with the aliens ;-)

Is there any markings on the back?

They might be wall plaques meant to give directions.

I think you may have stumbled across the wall plates from the language lab. They were bolted on the wall of the last alien spaceship that came to earth just before the Roswel crash! That way the little buggers could learn our alphabet and blend right in with us. Seriously though, if they were engraving plates I dont think they would all be together. They would be seperate letters and there would be no reason for the screw holes.I dont know what they are but I'll bet on the aliens with all those funny symbols.

ger : I'm from Rowland Hts, Ca, about 20 miles west of Ontario, Ca , and 25 mi. NW of Disneyland in Anahiem. I show my Tractors at the Vista Ca. Show. The plates were mounted on a wall, as some had paint residue on the back. The Word "tack" is on one plate and " Code " on another.
