Wiring Harness plugs, where to find!

Where can I find automotive type plugs to make up a new wiring harness? All I've been able to find are data (computer) and voice line plugs at MSC, McMaster-Carr, Graingers, and even Radio Shack. I've found no dealer support, since this an obsolete piece of equipment, and certainly not a collectable. Its for a 12 volt system. The existing alternator is rated at 35 amps.

Could 'make do', even if I could find supplier for 6 or 8 wire plugs.

What you are looking for are called the Packard Delco 56 connectors and are still out there if you know where to look , it took me years to find new supplyer but now it is easy , if you can find and old truck salvage yard then look in the older Internationals or older GMC. even the Cheve pick ups of the sixtys and early 70 or if ya want new the Terminal Supply of Detroit Mich. Then ya need the male and Female ends and they come in 14-16 10-12 ga. sizes then ya need the crimper tool as they are a real bear to do with out they crimping tool and at 75 cents a pice ya don't want to scrap tomany out.

Might try an Artic Cat snowmobile dealer, Tho I think it used a 5 wire plug on the engine in 1973

I'm not exactly sure what connector you'r searching for, but try an auto wrecking yard. Cars of the 70's & early 80's used a two piece white nylon connector about 1/2" thick x 1/2" to 1" wide, depending on # of wires. Anywhere from 2 to 6 wires or even more. You will have to buy new pins (male & female) if you want to run your wires into the connector, rather than use pigtails. It also requires a special crimper to do the pins. And there are several kinds of pins, depending on manufacturer of the connector. You might get by with soldering. If you have a large electronics supply store in your area, try them. I know Radio Shack used to have them, but I don't see any in the 1999 catalog. If it's for your alternator, check with an auto starter/generator rebuilder.

Can get several different weather pack plugs from NAPA or any automotive parts store. Also, when I worked at a JD dealership, we carried many different wiring harness plugs. All new with snap in pins and weatherproofing inserts.

Hi Wayne,

Like Brad says NAPA sells alot even for newer trucks.

One guy on thedieselstop.com even made a Ford connector that he could not buy. He has pictures and easy to follow instructions. I couldn't believe how simple it was to make them.

Do a search for wire connector in the forums. I think it was un the "general" forum heading.

Might try a Tractor supply store (TSC), J.C Whitney or wire connectors.com. Auto Zone ought to have something in 3M.

I usually just go to a junkyard and ask about salvaging wire out of an old car/truck. With a bit of solder and heat shrink tube for the splices and the split plastic wire loom stuff to make it neat and pretty you can make a cheap wiring harness that looks and works good.

Try an electronic supply store like Allied or Newark. One brand that comes to mind is Molex. You can make up any configuration you need. You will have a custom job but you will know how everything is connected.
