I've got a Milwaukee,a couple of DeWalts & a couple of Metabos. They are all fine, but I feel the Metabos are the best made, the most comfortable & all around best of the lot.Course, they are expensive too.

I have a few of the name brands and have no criticism of them for performance or durability. I also have 10 of the Chinese imports, each equipped for a different job so that I lose no time changing discs, etc. Bought some of them for $8.00 each new at a flea market. The gears are pretty good quality, but have very little grease in the gear box. I pack the gears with wheel bearing grease- the best grade. Only one of my cheap grinders has died. Carry a couple in the work truck too.

Hi John,

I like a 5" Makita as there just the right size for most jobs. 10,000rpm so you can use them with cut-off wheels. They also have a 5/8" arbor which makes finding more gindings wheels available.

I have a 4.5" Millwaukee that I don't use very much any more as it has a 1/2" arbor and your hands are too close to the blade. It's much slower to use than the Makita.

I also have a 9" Millwaukee thats my heavy grinder. I use this for ruffing out my grinding then use the Makita to fine finish the work. The 9" also has a 5/8" arbor.

I've had all three grinders for 30yrs. Friends have other brands that they had to replace during this time.

Most all commerical construction jobs use Millwaukee and the Makita as they cost less in the long run. T_Bone

It might just need new brushes.

John: I have had a 6" B&D for probably 20 years. Also have a craftsman 4-1/2 for about 10 years. No problem with either. According to mod. no. the craftsman was made by Skil. Craftsman has a metric spindle tho. Not to hip on a lot of metric sizes.

Have you thought about buying a Skil? We've had one on the farm for many years. It's not used everyday but does get used a lot when it does get used. Have had it over 10 years now.

I have used a Bosch for about 14 years now and it is still going strong. I disassemble it yearly along with the other electrical tools that I use in my shop. Blow them clean, clean and regrease any gears.

Milwaukee, Metabo, and the better DeWalt models are the best. Also there's one particular Porter-Cable model that's made by a German company called Flex. Quite nice.

Porter Cable, check the amp rating on the label, get the highest amp rating , get the one with the paddle switch, and besides that, Norm Abrams uses Porter Cable

Anybody know anything about air tools from Northern Tool and Equipment? They are cheaper, just wondering about the quality.

I bought a 6-piece set of Northern's air tools two years ago and they have all held up well. Granted, they're not Snap-On, but for intermittant use they work fine. The 1/2" impact was a bit under-powered compared to other units I have used, but as the entire set cost $135, you can't expect too much. The chisel, drill, and grinder have held up well, and I haven't used either of the sanders much.

I bought a mikita 4" several years ago...while it's been ok, it has a different size spindle than most popular brands....It's more difficult to find disks and brushes than it should be....I'd stay with dewalt, or one of the more popular american made brands.....bought a few power tools from sears, craftman brand....burned out no telling how many drills before I spent a little more and got a dewalt.....sears power tools = JUNK!
