A little off topic, blueing aluminum

I understand that this is a little off topic but there is so much knowledge represented here I thought I would try. Pulled a real good stunt this week and scratched the aluminaum receiver on my Colt HBAR (same as M16, AR 15). Cut through the finish and into the aluminum. I remember from basic training to use a pencil to cover scratches but was wondering if anyone could recommed a "cold blueing" compound that would match the grey finish and work on aluminun. I've used cold blue on muzzle loaders and was satisfied with the result but didn't know how it would do on aluminum. Thanks much !!!

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm off to the gun shop. I have a really good relationship with my gunsmith but I'm going to catch heck over that scratch. We ride each other a lot about everything.

BTW it's a real scratch, about 1/16" deep and about 2" long. It was rubbing against my fencing pliers in the back of the tractor cab.

As I mentioned below, the aluminum receivers on the m-16, HBAR's, etc are anodized, not blued.

If all you have is a scratch, go to your local gun shop and look for a chemical for blackening aluminum (it is sold under various names). It should be located with the cold bluing chemicals.

Depending on the alloy in your receiver, and how many coats you appply, you should be able to achieve a close enough gray color that it will be all but invisible. I have touched up the receiver of my AR-15 in the past with this stuff and it works just fine.

If you really want it pristine, take it to a shop and have it re-anodized.

The coating on your HBAR is known as parkerizing. Type "parkerizing" into Google and you'll get hundreds of hits. One of them should get you what you need.

Only the steel parts (i.e. barrels, etc) on the M-16's, HBAR's, etc are parkerized. Aluminum can not be parkerized.

The aluminum receivers on these guns are anodized.

DL, you're right. Can't parkerize aluminum.

Cold blue won't work on aluminum. Birchwood Casey makes touch up pens in gloss black and flat black. I don't know if they make a grey one though.I've used model car paint on some. Also used a magic marker a time or two.
Hope this helps

Brownells also has a spray product that may produce the result you want. It requires baking in an oven so you would have to seperate the upper and lower receiver parts, stock and so on.
