HI,

My air compressor runs and runs and doesn't build up pressure. Does anyone know where I can get a repair manual on what to check and how to repair...or does anyone out there have any suggestions.

Thanks
dave

I was given a compressor that sat for about twenty years and when I fired it up it had the same problem. After closer inspection there were mouse dropping and other crud under the intake screen and preventing the intake valves from closing. The intake valves on mine are like flapper valves that have some spring tension. It would suck it in and blow it right back out. I shop vac'd it clean and when I fired it up I dropped a couple of drops of air tool oil on each one and that freed it right up. Now if I could get the pressure shut-off valve from leaking (gasket blown) I'd be all set!

Yeah, I got a 30-or so year old Campbell Hausfeld from my grandfather, green thing with 1HP and cast iron single-cylinder pump. It also wouldn't build up pressure. Turns out the little copper tube that carries air from the pump to the tank was blocked by what looked like hair and grease. The block was at some device that sticks into the tank, and had holes in the bottom and sides of it. It was a totally unneccessary part (I hope), so I removed it. No block, the compressor worked like a charm. A little too much pressure-buildup time when I use the die grinder and rat5chet, but otherwise, It's a damn good compressor.

Eric:

Sounds like you pulled out the check valve. It closes against tank pressure to isolate the pump from the tank when it shuts off. Your exhaust valve is now probably doing the job of the check valve, i.e. keeping air from flowing back into the pump at shutdown. Sounds like you have enough power in the motor to restart against full tank pressure but it is hard on the motor doing so. There should be a little 1/4" bleed line from the check valve, or at the cylinder head in a Campbell-Hausfeld,usually leading to a needle valve on the side of the pressure switch, to release pressure between it and the pump when the compressor reaches its cut out pressure and stops. By relieving this pressure, the motor and pump get a loadless start, which results in much less amp draw on the motor. Most compressors will not start without this unloading taking place; they will just sit and hum and trip breakers. Your motor will last longer if you re-install a check-valve and blowdown line.
