well, one rod = 16.5 sq. ft., and one acre is 160 sq. rod. So, 1 acre is 43,560 sq. ft, or 10 sq. chains.

Follow that? :)

All of our fields in ND were 1/2 mile long, so a 16.5' cut was one acre. I used to do mental math with the width of whatever implement I was pulling to figure work rates, when I would finish the field, if I had enough seed, fertilizer, fuel, etc. Plows were 42" cut, field cultivator was 11.5', disc was 11', drill was 14', swather was 12', drag was 32', etc. Kept my mind from getting bored to do the mental math problems.

Scott --

We need a minor correction here . . . a rod is 16 1/2 feet (or 1/4 Gunther's chain), and an acre is 160 square chains (or 10 square Gunther's chains).

The "rod" is a linear unit, not an area unit, and a "chain" could be either a Gunther's or Surveyor's chain of 66 feet or an Engineer's chain of 100 feet.

John

Sure will be nice when we finally dump this ancient system and go to the Metric System. Lot easier multiplying and dividing by 10.

If you get the chance , pick up an old John Deere Pocket Ledger. They were given out several years ago by JD dealers and contain a wealth of information on any measurement you can think of along with other info. They are now collectable but are worth every penny. The info you have been given by others is correct.

The way I remember 43,560 is 7-11.

7=4+3 (43,000)

11=5+6 (560)

Hmm. The way I "remember" 43560 is that a square mile contains 640 acres (remember the Homestead Act?). (5280*5280)/640 = 43560.
