Hello all,

I've been searching the web for a few hours now and somehow landed here. I don't know if this a good topic or not, but what the heck it's a tool forum right ? So, I've got a used dishwaher that I have left over from a remodel and was thinking of converting it to a hot parts washer. I was thinking of using some type of holding tank and RV pump along with a filtration system. I don't need to be able to strip paint, just get the parts clean.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I use a industrial version at work. We get our detergent from a local supplier. Just don't use anything that makes suds. Our detergent will take paint off at 180degrees.

I saw a nice parts washer made with an oil drum turning very slowly with a small electic motor;1/4 full of solvent and small ceramic tiles. Let it turn overnite;sure did a nice job on very dirty parts

Junk dishwashers? Heck, I know guys who have used their wives' kitchen dishwashers for cleaning up parts when their wives weren't home!! lol

Seriously though, sure, why not do it?

A dishwasher makes a good parts cleaner. Back in the mid-70's I was rebuilding a Land Rover, used to use an old dishwasher all the time to clean parts. Used plain old dishwasher detergent, parts would be rusting before the drying cycle ended. I would scrape all the large gunk off the part and use the hottest water my water heater would put out.

Have a go at it.

That'll work, the plastic might not hold up for long, but you can make replacements. They make industrial units just for that purpose. The engine rebuilding shop I worked in in the 1970's got one to replace the trichloretheline hot tank that worked with vapor that I was using. It was big enough to put a 6-71 Detroit Diesel on end on the table. A screen type filter should be enough, it is a matter of whether you want ro clean nozzles or filters. It used a non foaming detergent. Those are available, too. Get a detergent that is compatible with the dishwasher parts, and with what you are cleaning, you don't want to etch aluminum, just clean it. Go to a shop around where you live that rebuilds engines, some NAPA stores have them, and look at their degreasing equipment and see if you can get any ideas. They may be able to sell you the detergent. You might even be able to contact the manufacturer of the dishwasher and see if there are any detergents they would recommend, and any toi stay away from.

Go for it! Just do not use a flamable solvent. I suspect the inside of the D/W will look like heck pretty quick.Pretty hard on the pump and seals too. But what the heck! It is a junk D/W!
