I followed all the advice from my earlier post. Thank you all. Now for the next question. My local dealer seems unable/unwilling to get the regulator. I took the cover off, it doesn't look like there is much to it. 2 relays. What goes wrong, what are the chances if I take it off and clean it all up, resolder the wires, it might work?
I'm getting tired of running out 100" of extensio cord to jump start it!
Thanks again
Mike

Mike, what kind of system are we talking about? Usually one "relay" is the "cutout" it disconnects the generator from the battery when the generator output drops below the battery voltage. The second "relay" is usually the "current" or "voltage" regulator. It limits the charging voltage to a predetermined voltage. usually 1-3 volts above rated battery voltage. If the points are burnt you can file them, if the solder is melted you can re-solder the connections. The resistance is quite critical in the windings so if the windings are burnt up you will probably need a new regulator. If you tell me what brand the generator is & what ground the system uses I can be more specific.

Mike, does the generator have an (F) & (A) terminal on it? And does the regulator have (F or FLD) & (A or ARM) & (B or BAT) on it? If so does the (B or BAT)on the regulator go to the battery or ign. switch?
