What is a good coating for shovels stored over the winter. The handles get linseed oil but what do you recommend for the blades? Plow coat would be too hard to work off in the spring. wouldn't it? Thanks for you reply. Dick

Dad always used axle grease on his plows when he was on the farm, but that might be too messy for garden tools.

I've sprayed Liquid Wrench on things to keep them from rusting. Seems to work OK.

Had real good luck with ZEP aerosol preservative. Spray on and leaves a nice long lasting film.

Use the linseed oil on the blande too. I've found that linseed oil works great on metals that are used out in the elements. Trailor hitches, balls, garden tools, etc. It gets a little tacky but it wears off with use.

I have seen many people fill a old pot with sand and pore there used motor oil in it and just dip there clean tools in it and hang the tool on the wall for the winter worth a try

WD-40 works the best for me, has enough oil in it so it lasts between uses. chris

WD-40 is OK for short term, but evaporates away too quickly. Suggest "SUPERLUBE" instead - it has a heavier base and doesn't evaporate away so quickly. I especially like it for firearms that are stored for months at a time. (Unfortunately, my supply is running low, and K-mart doesn't carry it anymore.) For garden tools, I have dipped them in used motor oil, allwed excess to drip off, and hang for the winter.

I picked up a couple of cans (' can't remember where) of "fogging oil" meant for just such things. It seems to work better than the WD-40 stuff which I used to use in that it doesn't seem to evaporate away so readily.

Thanks Brian, you just reminded me I have a can of "Chain Fogging" spray down in the baler! I'll bet that would have a longer lasting effect than some of the other all purpose sprays. I'm also going to do another spade with lindseed to check out that recommendation. Thanks everyone for your ideas. Dick Davis
