Welder Amperage ratings?

I currently have a Lincoln 100 (or 110, I can't remember) and have gotten pretty good at welding sheet metal and small steel. I think the amperage range is from 25 to 100 amps. I would like to start welding thicker material, from 1/4" to 1/2", maybe even 3/4" with multiple passes. My question is, what kind of amperage rating should I look for when looking at a bigger welder? Is there a scale that says what amperage level you need for certain thicknesses of mild steel? Will a 175 amp rated welder do what I need? What do you guys use?

Thanks
JJ

AC-DC 225 amp is what you need. The electrode size and type is what dictates the amp needed; not the thickness of steel. Example: I use a lot of 7014 1/8 inch rods, which I weld at about 125 amps. Use a Miller Bobcat 225 NT welder. You see many people making a living with this welder.

You wont something in the 225amp range as a rule 1amp per .001 of a inch sow 1/4 250amp and 3/4 would be around 750amp as you can see this is only a very very ruff rule my personnel opinion if you plan on using the welder a lot and you are willing to take a welding class go and get your self a TIG welder in the 250amp range you can use it as a STICK welder and a TIG welder and only your skills will limit you on what you can weld with it but if you just wont a stick welder get a AC/DC model Lincoln and Miller are very good choices

For straight AC I like a Lincoln 225. Inexpensive, reliable, good arc quality, easy to set. I've got a Miller Thunderbold AC-DC but prefer the Lincoln for AC work. You need a 225 for what you are wanting to weld. Last one I bought for 229.00 (it was a floor model. In the box they were $249.00 Normally I prefer Miller (I've got a 250 MIG, a Synchrowave TIG, and a Miller plasma cutter)but the Lincoln AC is tough to beat.
