Back in July I posted on this board asking how to git rid of skunks from under my cabin .
I tryed the amoina (sp),tryed the bleach, nothing seemed to work. They would be gone for a little while but would always come back as time passed.
But thier not there anymore.
This is what I had to do to get rid of them.
I went and bought a live trap and a trash can big enough to put the whole trap in, and trash bags big enough to set the trapin.
The DNR told me that a skunk will not spray what they can't see, and if they can't get thier tail up over their back they won't spray either. So I set the trap, baited it with some bad smelling cat food. Placed the trap into the trash bag. Next morning there was one mad skunk in the trap and part of the trash bag was ripped to shreds. But there was enough of the trash bag left that I could sneak up on the trap with out being seen by the skunk. Threw an old sheet over the trap so the skunk was in the dark and could not see any light. Took the trash can to the end of the hose and filled it completely to the top. Went back to the trap and the skunk had calmed down so much I didn't think it was still there. Very slowley I lifted the trap and carried it to the trash can, set the trap on the edge of the trash can tipped it up and slid it into the water. Boy was the skunk pissed for a little while, but calmed down pretty quick. I also found out they can't get thier tail over thier back to spray when they are not on all four feet. So it could not spray.
Two skunks and one possium less in the world and no more holes dug under my cabin for the last two months. Hope this will help someone else. It didn't seem right buying a live trap just to kill the things.

Last spring came a late night phone call. A skunk had taken up residence in my sister's storage shed! (between the lawn mower and the rabbit cages). Asked her if was ok to install a 1/2 inch hole in the floor. OK, so went over the next evening. Was cool and raining, good time to be inside. 3 cell Maglight revealed a good sized male skunk relaxing in the corner. Boom! Skunks will not spray after meeting a 180 grain jacketed soft nose .44 special from a 629 Smith and Wesson. No further skunk problem in the shed!

You never want to shoot a skunk inside a building unless you are prepared to not use it for a year and are prepared to smell skunk for years.

It is possible that they won't spray if you hit them just right. But most of us are not good enough shots at a moving target to be reasonably sure of the skunk not spraying as it dies. I have shot a few skunks over time and ALL OF THEM SPRAYED, at least some. It only took shooting one in a barn for me to decide I would never do that again!

Read the previous post carefully. Relaxing in the corner means not moving! Have been a successful hunter for 30 years, although arthritis is slowing me a little now. As with all hunting, shot placement is critical. Shooting at most moving targets is wishful thinking and should be avoided. Every deer I've shot was with a clean kill and I've not yet had a wounded animal run on me. (dropped where they stood). Problem skunk shuddered at impact and never moved or sprayed. In Ohio it is illegal now to live trap and move wild animals, (rabies). Not boasting but these are the facts, in my case. Have heard many outrageous hunting stories in my time, but am much more impressed with a 300 yard stalk and a 50 yard shot than a 350 yard shot! Don

Yep, that's how we normally get rid of 'em around here. Run 'em for office, elect them and send them off to Washington, DC. Quite often they will find their way back, though, and then we call them "incumbents".

Skunks are nocturnal, so an easy way to get them from under a building is to put lights under the structure. They prefer someplace dark, so they leave. Whatever you do, don't poison them. When the muscles relax, they spray.

Seems to me your a brave brave man to handle skunks like that. Closest I want to get to them is about 50 feet with a 12 gauge shotgun, even then I get nervous.

All is fair when uninvited guests with destruction in mind and oppressive odor move in. When I had this problem, it recurred the next spring until I put a screen wire from the floor joist down into the ground. Buried the screen about 24" deep. This was deep enough that the varmints got discouraged when access was difficult and they moved on to some other unsuspecting host.
