What is the correct way to wire a pressure switch with a 220 motor on a compressor?

Thanks

The switch should have four terminals. The two power input wires go to the terminals marked L1 and L2. The other two terminals go to the motor. A bare or green wire on the input cable should be connected to a good ground. If you are unsure of your hookup, please have it checked out by a knowledgeable person as severe arcing or a severe shock could occur if it isn't right.

You have two concerns

The switch MUST be rated for the size of the motor in HP, not just for the running amps.
If not the contacts could weld and keep the motor on till some other part fails (such as the tank exploding).

The switch must be a two pole. Designed to break both hot lines. Breaking only one line will stop the motor, but leave the compressor wires ina very dangerious mannor.

If either of these two issues exist, I would use the preessure switch to control a contactor of the proper number of contacts and HP rating.

I wired mine using 10-3 with ground. Use the red and black wires as the hot, 120v each. The green or bare wire is the ground of course and I just put a wire nut on each end of the white wire so if I ever change that circuit to another use I don't have to rewire it.

The switch should have two poles, that is two sets of contacts. One of the two hot wires goes to each set of contacts. It is like two 120 volt switches in one, as you are using two 120 volt wires to get your 220, or 240. You need to switch each wire in a 220 circut.

Be sure to check if switch will handle the horsepower rating of the motor. Most of those switches will only handle about one horsepower.
