My yard light goes on and off all night.
I'm sure it got hit by lightning. Can a light like this be repaired? If it can be repaired, where can i get parts to fix it. Maybe i'll just get a new one like i did last time, but if i could fix it for less money then a new one, it would be nice.

I once installed a new light on the South side of a white building. After some experimenting I found that the eye which I installed to the north, as I read in the directions, was picking up reflected light from the wall of the building.
After I turned the eye to the East I had no more problem.

Sounds like the HPS bulb needs to be replaced. What you described is typical of a bad lamp or a lamp with a lotta hours on it. I'd try a lamp first and if it still acts the same try the photo-cell as mentioned before.

If it is one of the cheaper lights you buy at one of the chain building and supply stores. It would probably be cheaper in the long run just to replace it. One trip to the store to buy a new light. Not one for a bulb then one for a photocell and then you could have a bad ballast. If it is cutting off and on because of light hitting the photo cell something had to change to cause this.

Farmer Tom is right, when a hps lamp nears the end of its life it starts to draw more current and the overload kicks out. When it cools down it will restrike and light again, so it is time to replace the lamp and your problem will be solved.

My light started going off anytime my heatpump kicked on. Just a little drain on the power was enough. I replaced the bulb and photo cell and that cleared that problem. The light is about 7 years old and that was the only problem. I don't think it was ever hit by lightning though.

Sounds like you are having photo cell trouble. Is it seeing it's own reflected light and turning it's self off? Try covering the photo cell to see if it stays on, if so it may be turning it's self off.

Farmer Tom is right. It is the bulb. I had this happen 2 times already. When the bulbs go bad or weak, they will go on and off especially when an appliance kicks in that will put a "bump" on the line drawing a slight voltage drop. I was told this by an experienced electrician of many years. It worked for me. Go with the bulb, I would bet on it.
