I need to get a post hole auger and would appreciate your input. Should I get the cheap $400 unit like what Northern Tools offers. Or top of the line, like Danuser? Or a Land Pride? Or something else?

It will be used on the 3-point of a 27HP tractor. Have ~100 holes to put in now, but want a unit that will last. Soil seems soft, but likely has rocks.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I own a Bush Hog post hole digger. Mine is equipped with a 12" auger with the bear claw cutting edges. Mine seems to be a very good machine, and I'm happy with it.

I own one of the El Cheapo's. I just bought last year and it does fine. The reason I bought the $350 one is:

1) I only do fence work on my 20 acres and not for a living.

2) I have two buddies with the same exact digger and they have not given them any problems. One is over 10 years old and the other is around 5-7 years old.

I must admit, a Danuser is twice the machine and three times the price, but it's not worth it for what I do. If I did fence for a living, well, it would be the best then.

Just my opinion.

Don't buy a cheap one. The augers and cutting tips are what makes a huge difference in the performance of the auger. I suggest a Deere, Bushhog, Danuser, Land Pride etc. Avoid the $500 cheapies.
