Hello folks,

saw a question on a winch here and thought somebody might have a recommendation for a come-a-long.

I have a cheap one rated 1 ton and it is inadequate most of the time. Can somebody suggest a good quality one, preferably Made in USA, rated for at least 2.5 tons, 5 is better. Source to purchase would be great also. I tried local Tractor Supply and they carry junk.

Intended use is tractor/vehicle recovery in emergency, loading or inoperable machinery on a trailer for transport, fence stretching, etc.

I recommend the Hi-Lift jack. Can be used as a winch, jack, or clamp. I bought one after getting a tractor stuck out in a dry (almost) pond bed and another tractor couldn't move it. The jack has eyes on both ends so you can insert a clevis. The jack is rated 2 1/3 tons. I bought the 5 foot model for about $50 from my local Agri Supply store. Have since used it to jack up the tractor, barn sheds, and winched out a 20 inch diameter tree that was laying horizontal across other trees (in the mountains). You can get brackets to mount it in your truck or on farm machinery and replacement parts are easy to get. If you have a tractor or 4x4 you need one of these, along with chains, slings, clevises, etc.

More Power Puller, made by Wyeth -Scott. I got mine from Forestry Suppliers (www.forestysuppliers.com I think) over twenty years ago. They are rated two tons, use 5/16 cable and can handle up to 30 feet of cable. The frame is a steel forging, and the whole thing weighs over 15 pounds. One of the best features is that repair parts are available for it. I carry mine when snowplowing, and it has saved me more times than I want to think about. The worst problem I have had with it is that there is no control of the cable when it is unwound and it can bird-nest pretty badly. I also have a cheapo one for lighter use.

I work at a farm store and we sell the Maasdam Power Pull. We have 2 models. They are rated 1000 lbs and 2000 lbs. Both have 3/16 cable. The difference is the 2000 lb. model has a pulley block that the hook is attached to. It's American made. The 2000 lb. model sells for around 35.00. They hold up well and replacement parts are available. I know they make heavier ones but we've never had them.
We also sell some of the chinese imports and I cringe every time I see one sell. In my opinion they are not worth a hoot. I try to explain the difference and sell the good ones.
Hope this helps

The only one I have ever owned that really worked great was a heavy duty one with a single chain. The pull was only about 6 feet, but I always got along with it just fine. The good ones can be a bit pricy...like 500 bucks +, but once-in-awhile one can find a used one.

I found a brand of come-along that I really like. Called Mini Mule. Cast aluminum parts instead of stamped sheetmetal. I little larger than most but WAY WAY better.I got then here in Seattle from Tacoma Screw Products.

Hi wirehair,

I have a 2-ton Dayton single line 4-ton double line, WW Graingers, 3/16" cable, heavy cast AL frame that does well and is very well made. There on the expensive side tho, about $150 They also make a chain type that goes heavier, 10-ton? It works just like a chain-fall but with a single chain and works like a cable come-a-long. I lost mine on the roadway using it as a load binder on a flatbed trailer. I won't do that again!

The chain type come-a-long is alot better to use than a cable type and will last longer with less headaches.
