Hey guys, I have a question regarding shops and those darn little pesky critters we all know and love, MICE AND RATS!
I have a shop with 2 12' wide sliding doors so there is always access for the little buggers to get in. My question is "is there anything that I could spray around the door openings and along the door opening to keep the little devils out? Locked the cats in there tonight with water and hopefully they will earn their keep but any thoughts on how to keep them out would be appreicated.

Cats are good, but get darn messy too, liking to jump on things and knock off parts. scatter moth balls around the doors, and behind the cabinets, mice don't seem to like naptha very well. for Poison, just use coca-cola in a shallow dish, won't hurt cats, put it out fresh every couple of days, you see, mice and rats bloat like herefords and angus out on fresh alfalfa, cause they can't belch, like cattle. they drink it and die, no kidding. Ya gotta get about a dozen cats. Seems the poison you get anymore only fattens them, and if you could get a good poison it would kill the other animals. Heh, dont feed the cats to good, Make them earn keep. We had old barn cats, they didnt even like people and stayed hid out when you were around. Only bad thing tho, the cats killed every snake they could find. Few snakes dont hurt none. Good rodent control also if you can tolerate them.

Hi Mac,

You made me chuckle on the snakes. We have bull snakes and ratlle snakes here. To compete for food the bull snakes hiss like a rattler does making the same sound.

So one night I'm going out to check water and a bull snake is on the cover to the pump hole. He's hissing for everything he's got to scare me away. They very seldom do that to a human so it supprised me.

I start shinning my flashlite around then spoted the bull snake again and out pops a kangaroo rat out of a hole the bull snake was watching ruining his dinners catch.

I swear that bull snake looked me in the eyes. Now only if I could read snake minds. LMAO

I think you had the right ideal with the cats. Only sure method. I fixed my shop so the barn cats and go in and out with at their leasure. I keep their food in the shop and they sleep there. I don't have any problem with mice and such.

I agree with Kraig -- cats are the way to go. I have two machine sheds, a couple of other sheds and an attached garage. My five cats keep the mouse population well under control. And rats? I've only seen one in the past 13 years, and it was in a space the cats couldn't get to. (I called my dog and, boy, did that rat briefly squeal!) Traps are a losing proposition -- too many potential mice to keep up with. Poison may work, but it leaves rotting carcasses in walls, etc. Go with the cats.
