Is it possible to change or modify a 3-phase motor to run on 110 or 220 house current? Bought a compressor at auction that has two 3-phase motors.

yes you can run the 3 phase motor on single phase if it is a combination 440/220 volt motor. you can connect it to 220 single phase. if it was running a lathe or table saw that starts with very little load it would be a little simpler. since a compressor starts up with some load you need a couple oil filled capacitors and another 3 phase motor as a "generator". or you can use a "static converter" which cost about $200. probably cheaper to buy a 2 HP motor at Farm Store for $200. that is unless you have several 3 phase motors in your shop, then the conversion is more economical since one converter can run several different motors. if you need more info, i can give you.

I'm thinking I've read that you can run 3-phase on 2-phase power. but I don't remember all you have to do so you can do it. I do remember that a 3 phase motor won't start itself on 2 phase.

No you can't change it to 220 or 110, you can replace the motor with one that will run on 220.
